Alternative Yom Kippur
Join us for Alt YK; An alternative Yom Kippur experience

Yom Kippur is the Jewish day of atonement. It is a day like none other on our calendar. It's a day of radical self-awareness, apologizing, forgiving, and refraining from the pleasures of daily life. It's also a day of yearning, hoping, changing, singing and starting over. That's asking A LOT of us and sometimes we need different Jewish access points and community experiences to get the most out of what Yom Kippur can offer.

On Saturday, October 12th, GatherDC is excited to host FOUR Yom Kippur experiences to make it possible for Jewish 20s and 30s like you to observe this introspective Jewish holiday in inclusive, creative, and non-traditional ways. Yom Kippur is a great holiday with not the best PR. We're trying to change that so we can all move into the new year with more courage, direction, and the very best people to be part of the journey.

Please choose from any or all of the opportunities below in which you would like to participate. Some experiences will close early due to space limitations, so sign up as soon as possible.

Each of these experiences is open to Jewish and Jew-curious young adults of all gender identities, sexual orientations, levels of religiosity, backgrounds, ethnicities, and abilities.

For questions, please email melanies@gatherdc.org.

Alternative Yom Kippur Morning Service

Alt YK Morning Service: 10:00am-12:00pm

This is an exploratory Yom Kippur experience led by GatherDC’s Community Rabbi, Rabbi Amalia. It’s not a prayer service and it’s not in a synagogue, although the space we’ll create together will be sincerely Jewish and very communal.

Together with other Jewish 20s and 30s, we will gather to observe Yom Kippur through ways that are intended to help us authentically connect to this most important Jewish holiday. This will include small group discussions over Jewish texts, outside-the-box approaches to traditional High Holiday rituals, activities for personal introspection, live Jewish and secular folk music, and thematic storytelling by Rabbi Amalia.

We’ll also be collecting charitable donations as a way to give back to our local DMV community. More details will be shared upon registration.

Location: Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (641 D St. NW). Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company is ADA accessible.

Lunchtime Community Gathering 12:30pm-1:30pm

There are many who cannot fast on Yom Kippur. This will be a space for those who find it meaningful and helpful to be with other people who also do not fast and engage in a Jewish conversation about what it means to honor the act of tending to one's body and spirit on this holy day.

Please note: food and drinks will not be provided. Everyone has their own nutritional needs, so we ask that you bring what you would feel most comfortable eating or drinking to sustain yourself. Also, we will not require anyone to share why they are not fasting.

You do not need to join our morning experience to participate.
